Path of Exile - Most Surprising Game 2013

Platform: PC
Publisher: Grinding Gear Games
Developer: Grinding Gear Games

Where the hell did these amazing games come from? Every year, there's a slew of titles that hang below the radar and don't gain much attention until they're officially released much later in the year. The vast majority of them are indie titles or new IPs. Both Brothers and Blood Dragon came out of left field, amazing us in almost completely different ways. The Stanley Parable's existential twist on gameplay knock us off our laurels, and BandFuse was a more than legitimate answer to Ubisoft's Rocksmith series.

On top of the list, though, is Path of Exile. While it's been in development for many years, it fixes nearly everything that fans didn't like about the initial release of Diablo III, particularly its real-money auction system and lack of endgame content. It introduces innovative concepts from FF7 in its gem system, has a ridiculously expansive skill tree, supports the competitive community with a season of events, and effectively brings the gameplay from Diablo II that many hardcore fans wanted from a sequel in the first place. And it does this all while being free-to-play. From an indie developer in New Zealand, Path of Exile is an incredible feat and one of the best surprises this year.

Ubisoft, despite playing it safe with a lot of their properties and rehashing concepts on an annual basis, actually took a pretty big risk with Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, a cheap total conversion of Far Cry 3. The risk paid off... big time. The property has moved more than a million copies all by its lonesome and the success has piqued the interest of Ubisoft to potentially pursue a limited retail run for the game.

Ubisoft CEO confirms Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon has sold over a million units and may be turned into a retail release.

80s-themed Far Cry 3 spin-off could be turned into a boxed retail release, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot has said.

Blood Dragon was released as a downloadable earlier this year for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC, and has sold more than a million copies. , Guillemot says its success helps justify the company's push into digital software.

"What's changing is that there's more digital sales," Guillemot said. "So it means that you can come up with games that are smaller in size but bigger in innovation, because you don't target a huge group--you target specific audiences."

Guillemot later confirmed that Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon had broken a million in sales, and that "maybe we'll go to retail at one point so we'll achieve a bit more."

In May, voice actor Michael Biehn said that the game's creative director
